How do jeans buttons work?

To understand how jeans buttons work, you need to know that a standard pair of jeans has three main trims: rivets, belt loops, and metal buttons/zippers. Rivets are used to decorate and reinforce seams; belt loops are used to secure belts to wrap around the waist; and metal jeans buttons, which are heavier than flat buttons and shank metal buttons, are used to hold the waistband snugly and facilitate the donning and doffing of the garment. On children’s wear, jeans buttons are also used as overall buttons.

Jeans buttons consist of two parts – buttons and studs. They are installed in the same way as rivets, only the studs are placed on the inside of the fabric and the button is located on the outside with the help of a hammer to achieve fixation. After being fixed, the waistband can be fixed by passing the button through the hole.

Button fly VS zipper fly

As mentioned above, the jeans button is to facilitate the fixing of the waistband, so can I use a zipper instead of a button? The answer is yes.

The button fly is the most traditional closure – when jeans were first introduced, they used a button fly. The zipper fly only became mainstream in the 1970s because it helped save time. But button fly is more durable than zipper fly, which can break or snag and are harder to fix.
